There is a lot of cross-over between these three curriculum areas, however all three are important for Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Heritage
Heritage covers a wide range of interests and activities linked to history and natural history. Whilst many people study the heritage of Herefordshire and Worcestershire for pleasure, there are a wide range of careers for appropriately qualified people in this area. This may include careers in archaeology, education, environmental management, local government and planning, the media and museums.
Why is Heritage important for Herefordshire and Worcestershire?
Both counties are rich in sites of interest for natural history and history. Herefordshire and Worcestershire have a number of unique geological features including the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark as well as the Woolhope Dome and Wye Valley areas. In addition it provides a wide range of habitats. The history of the area is also diverse and there are a number of prehistoric sites, ancient hill-forts and a large number of castles, historic houses and churches. As well as these visible reminders of the past, both counties have strong oral and written traditions – with traditional fairs and activities. Across the region there are a range of museums and sites open to the public.
Heritage provides a number of benefits to local residents, through improved environment and a sense of place and context.
Heritage is a key reason for tourism into the area with an international renown for the Marches landscape. Visits to Herefordshire and Worcestershire contribute substantially to the local economy.
Qualifications in Heritage
Although there is a fairly limited number of careers opportunities in Heritage, most require some form of qualification.
These include:
- A range of skills and specific interest courses – run through clubs & societies, evening classes at colleges, or through private organisations
- Schools and Colleges also run GCSE, A’levels in History & Archaeology, and 14-19 diplomas in humanities (coming soon)
- Schools and Colleges also run Vocational qualifications: BTEC First Diploma, National Diploma, OCR National, NVQs
- Work-based learning: NVQs, Apprenticeships
- At higher levels these include; Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree, BA & BSc, MSc, and PhD offered full-time and part-time (at Worcester University) or by distance learning through the Open University

Culture & Media
Culture & Media is linked to the arts, customs, and habits of a society or group. Whilst culture is transmitted from generation to generation it is never static, with each new generation building on the experience of their predecessors. Thus Morris dancers may continue a long tradition, yet they continually bring something new to the art form. Culture lies beneath the beliefs, values, behaviour and material objects that constitute a people's way of life;
Media is concerned with the transmission and representation of culture. As such it covers a range of creative activities from Art Blacksmithing to Drama, from Poetry to Pottery, and from Web design to Music.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire are both vibrant communities, with many people involved in the arts, either individually or within societies.
