Sport and Tourism
Sport and Tourism are important areas of employment, study and leisure in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. They provide enjoyment and challenge for people of all ages and abilities.

What is Sport?

Sport includes a broad range of physical activities undertaken for personal enjoyment but where the capabilities of the sportsperson determine the outcome. It is broadly considered as a leisure activity although there are many people who take part in sport as a job.

Sports range from team activities (football, netball), to individual sports (golf, orienteering, archery).

Why is Sport important in Herefordshire and Worcestershire?

Herefordshire and Worcestershire have a large number of professional and amateur teams – some like Hereford United, Worcester County Cricket team or the Worcester Wolves are known nationally, others compete within local or regional leagues. In addition individual sports people compete internationally, nationally, regionally and within local leagues and clubs.  Whatever level people participate at there are a range of benefits associated with Sports:

Health and Wellbeing:
Participating in physical activities is widely considered to have considerable health and wellbeing benefits for people of all ages. 

Social links:
Most sports include an opportunity for people to meet and develop social linkages. Friendships and relationships often develop from shared interests in sports, and membership of teams and clubs provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be involved in  the organisation of sports.

Passion and Motivation:
Many people are passionate about Sports. The challenge of mastering a sport, or the physical pleasure of participation motivates many people to set themselves targets and goals.    

EmpAcross Herefordshire and Worcestershire there is a considerable amount of employment related to Sports. This ranges from people involved in the construction and running of sports facilities, people involved in retail; people involved in coaching; and those involved in professional sport.

Qualifications in Sport

There are a wide range of careers opportunities in sport, and most will require some form of qualification. These include:

  • Most sports are run by National Governing Bodies who run a range of skills courses and coaching qualifications
  • Schools and Colleges also run GCSE, A’levels, and 14-19 diplomas (coming soon) in Sports
  • Schools and Colleges also run Vocational qualifications: BTEC First Diploma, National Diploma, OCR National, NVQs
  • Work-based learning: NVQs, Apprenticeships
  • At higher levels these include; Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree, BA & BSc, MSc, and PhD

What is Tourism?

Tourism is travel for recreational or leisure purposes. It includes local trips to places of interest as well as regional, national and international travel.

Why is Tourism important in Herefordshire and Worcestershire?

Tourism is a major area of employment in Herefordshire and Worcestershire with key areas of natural beauty such as the Wye Valley, Malvern Hills and the Wyre Forest, as well as major tourist sites such as the West Midlands Safari Park and the Severn Valley railway. In addition the area has a number of historic cities and market towns, and a wide range of museums and historic buildings. Throughout the year there a range of high profile festivals and sporting events that attract people from afar. 

The region also attracts tourists who come to the region to be involved in activities such as walking, golf courses, guided tours, canals, canoeing and hill-walking.

In addition to the inbound tourism there is also considerable employment in outbound tourism ranging from travel agencies, tour operators and supporting industries.

Tourism has a major impact on employment in the region. As well as the people directly employed in tourism there is considerable secondary employment in hospitality and catering, travel, retail and other related industries.
